How to cast a write-in vote

Paper or mail ballot

  1. Find MEMBER OF THE BOARD OF EDUCATION – Florence Township – Vote for Three. There are 3 blank write-in (personal choice) lines, each with an oval.
  2. On one write-in line, print GAVIN ROZZI (R-O-Z-Z-I).
  3. On another write-in line, print BRITNEY FERDETTA (F-E-R-D-E-T-T-A).
  4. Fill in the oval next to each name you wrote. The scanner reads the oval.
  5. For a mail ballot: place the ballot in the inner envelope, sign and date the certificate on the outer envelope, seal it, and return it by one of the methods above.

Voting machine (Election Day or early voting)

  1. Find MEMBER OF THE BOARD OF EDUCATION – Florence Township on the screen.
  2. Select the Write-In option for that office and type GAVIN ROZZI.
  3. Select Write-In again and type BRITNEY FERDETTA.
  4. Review and cast the ballot.

Write-in rules

  • A write-in vote is counted if the name can reasonably be attributed to the candidate. Exact spelling avoids any dispute.
  • The same name written on two lines of one ballot counts once.
  • Write-in candidates are not required to register or file anything before the election.
  • A seat with no printed candidate is won by the qualified write-in candidate with the most votes, even a single vote, provided the person accepts.

How a write-in winner is certified

After Election Day, the Board of Elections tallies write-in votes by name. A write-in candidate who receives the most votes for a seat contacts the Burlington County Clerk to file a certification accepting the office; this must be done before the county certifies the results. Once certified, the winner is sworn in at the board's reorganization meeting in early January 2027. If no qualified person wins or accepts a seat, the Burlington County executive county superintendent of schools appoints someone to fill it.

Who may serve on the board

A Board of Education member must be a United States citizen at least 18 years old, able to read and write, registered to vote in the district, and a resident of Florence Township for at least one year immediately before the election. A member may not hold certain conflicting offices or have a disqualifying criminal conviction.
